Roger did his Master’s degree in the field of fluvial hydraulics and he has specialised on this throughout his career. In addition he has extensive experience in the structural design of bridges, wharves and other marine structures together with the seismic strengthening of existing buildings. He has worked in NZ, Canada, Britain, S.E. Asia,Pacific Rim countries and Chile in design, project management and construction supervision roles.
For 15 years up to 1998 he was a Director and Regional Manager for Worley Consultants Limited, responsible for 40 professional and technical staff in Hamilton. He was the recipient of a premier New Zealand award for structural design.
He has been a Board Member of the Worley Group, the Professional Superannuation and Benefits Group and of the Consulting Engineers Advancement Society which provides professional indemnity insurance for the engineering, architectural and valuation professions in New Zealand. Roger was a Council Member on the Waikato Polytechnic for 11years, including 6 years as Chairman. He was Chairman of the Building Committee for five years, closely involved with the planning and management of a multi-million dollar building program including several multi-storey buildings.
As a Principal and Director of CAL Engineering Management since 2001 Roger has continued his fluvial hydraulics specialty with investigation, reporting and the giving of expert evidence on several major projects. These include:
- the flooding of the Kaihu River near Dargaville which was exacerbated by the localised construction of stopbanks
- the severe back-scouring of flat land adjacent to the Whanganui River near Taumarunui consequential on the effects of gravel mining operations
- the remedial measures proposed by the Whakatane District Council to protect the community following the Matata debris flow in 2005
- severe scouring of a floodpath designed and constructed to take excess floodwaters from the Tauranga-Taupo river
Management of projects has included:
· four separate artificial wet turf hockey fields. This work included instructing town planners for Resource Consents, instructing consultant engineers to design the civil content together with the writing of documents and calling of tenders for design-build contracts for artificial lighting and for water pumping reticulation and sprinklers. The project management work also included the scheduling and integration and administration of the various contracts.
· the controlled landfill of an old sand quarry and surrounds for Te Rapa Shingle Ltd which has a contract value in excess of $1.5million
Design projects have included:
· the seismic strengthening measures for Heritage buildings including the Carnegie Hall Library in Thames for the Thames Coromandel District Council and the chapel at the YWCA at Hamilton
· a floating jetty on the Waihou river for Hauraki District Council to take vessels of up to 50 dwt.
